A Simple Guide to Count the Charging Speed of Your iPhone

Ever wonder why your iPhone charges at different speeds? Understanding how charging works can help you optimize your time and choose the right accessories. It all comes down to a simple concept: Watts.

The Core of Charging: Watts (W)

Think of Watts as the total power a charger delivers. The more Watts, the faster your iPhone can charge. This power is the product of two factors: Volts (V), which is electrical pressure, and Amps (A), which is electrical current (Watts = Volts x Amps).

For example, a standard charger might output 5V and 1A, giving you 5W of power. A fast charger, on the other hand, can deliver 9V and 2.22A, resulting in about 20W. This significant difference is why some chargers can get your iPhone to 50% in just 30 minutes, while others take much longer.

To find your charger's wattage, simply check the fine print on the adapter. It will list the output in volts and amps.

How Your iPhone Manages Charging Speed

Your iPhone doesn't just accept any amount of power. It's smart enough to negotiate the charging speed with the adapter to protect the battery.

  • Fast Charging (Power Delivery): Modern iPhones (iPhone 8 and newer) support USB Power Delivery (PD). To take advantage of this, you need a USB-C Power Adapter (20W or higher is ideal) and a USB-C to Lightning cable.
  • The 80% Rule: To preserve your battery's health, your iPhone charges fastest from 0% to 50%. After it reaches about 80%, the charging speed intentionally slows down. This is a normal function designed to reduce stress on the battery and extend its lifespan.

Practical Ways to Check Your Charging Speed

You don't need a fancy gadget to see how fast your iPhone is charging. Just do the following:

  • Check Your Charger: Make sure your charger is a 20W USB-C Power Adapter and that you're using a compatible, high-quality cable. If you're still using an old 5W charger, you'll see a noticeable difference when you upgrade.
  • Time It Yourself: The most direct method is to simply time it. Note the battery percentage and the time. If your phone goes from 0% to 50% in about 30 minutes, you're on track for optimal fast charging. If it's taking much longer, your charger might not be fast-charge compatible.
  • Check Battery Health: Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging. This will tell you if features like "Optimized Battery Charging" are active, which can affect the charging speed after 80%.

Factors That Can Slow Down Your Charging

  • Heat: If your phone gets too hot, it will automatically slow down charging to protect the battery. Avoid charging in direct sunlight or on a bed.
  • Background Apps: If you're using your phone for a heavy task like gaming or streaming a movie while it's charging, it will charge slower because the power is being consumed simultaneously.
  • Bad Cable: A damaged or non-certified cable can restrict power flow and drastically slow down your charging.
